| Methods of Reducing Burn Scars - What is the best? |
|
There are many methods of reducing burn scars, some include home remedies and others include topical scar treatments. But among all of the methods of reducing burn scars, one may question which approach is best. Consumers should be wary of “snake oil” or over-the-counter products that make big claims but have not been clinically proven to reduce any type of scar. No matter how minor or old the burn scar is, you should consult a physician prior to evaluating or trying out different methods of reducing burn scars.
Scar formation is a natural part of the healing process that occurs when the skin repairs itself from the burn. The time skin takes to heal will vary depending on the degree of damage, and the longer it takes to heal the greater the chance of a noticeable scar.
Hypertrophic scars may develop after suffering from widespread burn injuries. A hypertrophic scar is usually red, thick and elevated and can be itchy or painful. The growth of hypertrophic scars is confined to the boundaries of the original wound, and usually develops in the weeks after the burn injury. These scars may improve naturally; the healing and maturation process can take up to a year or more.
When evaluating methods of reducing burn scars, many select Kelo-cote® Scar Therapy. Kelo-cote® is a patented silicone scar treatment for managing and preventing abnormal scars, proven to be highly effective for hypertrophic scars from burns.
Kelo-cote® is the only topical scar product available in a gel and spray form. The spray is ideal for burn scars; it covers large areas quickly, including those that are hard to reach, dries rapidly and requires no touching or rubbing, which is beneficial for burn scars that are sensitive or painful to the touch. The spray is also easy to apply under compression garments that are often used to help burn scars mature.
Kelo-cote® is intended for the prevention and management of old and new hypertrophic and keloid scars resulting from general surgical procedures, trauma, wounds and burns. Kelo-cote® has demonstrated efficacy on raised and/or reddish colored scars regardless of their age. It may help to soften and flatten raised scars and reduce redness or discoloration associated with them.1,2,3 It may also reduce itching or irritation you may still be experiencing.
Note: Direct contact with third degree burns should be avoided. Please consult a physician prior to the treatment of any third degree burn. Kelo-cote® cannot be used in open wounds. Skin needs to be re-epithelialized (a closed wound with no bleeding or oozing) before using Kelo-cote®.
About Kelo-cote® Kelo-cote® is a patented topical silicone gel for the management and prevention of abnormal scars in the form of hypertrophic scars and keloids.
