Keloid Treatment - What is most effective?

There are keloid treatment products on the market that help alleviate discomfort around keloid scars that are red, raised, hardened, itchy and/or painful. According to published studies, an effective keloid treatment is silicone. Silicone is the clinical gold standard for keloid treatment and abnormal scar prevention. The International Clinical Recommendations on Scar Management recommended silicone as first-line therapy for scar treatment and abnormal scar prevention.1  Some physicians recommend silicone sheets for keloids or other abnormal scars.  However, silicone sheets can be inconvenient and noticeable; tape allergies, difficulty of use, and the potential for bacteria growth between the sheet and the skin are all problems inherent with sheeting.

Kelo-cote® is a keloid treatment and scar therapy product that has all the benefits of silicone sheets without the inconvenience.

Kelo-cote® is a patented topical silicone gel for the management and prevention of abnormal scars in the form of hypertrophic scars and keloids.  Regardless of the origin of the scar, Kelo-cote® has proven results, as evidenced by clinical studies and  satisfied healthcare professionals and customers  from around the world.  Kelo-cote® is the most studied topical scar product, with more than 2,000 patients participating in a variety of published clinical studies.

It is suggested by several studies that silicone gel sheets have been proven to work due to their semi-occlusive nature.  Kelo-cote® works in the same way as other silicone gel sheets for keloid treatment, however its unique formulation ensures that on application, an ultra thin layer of silicone binds to the top layer of the skin (stratum corneum) forming a durable sheet.

This discreet and ultra thin waterproof sheet increases the hydration of the stratum corneum but also allows the skin underneath to breathe. The thinner the layer, the more durable the material will be and the better the breathability. If Kelo-cote® is applied too thick it is unable to dry and the gel will remain sticky. If that occurs, wipe off the excess and allow to dry.

Because Kelo-cote® binds to the stratum corneum, the contact time of the silicone gel is maximized. Coupled with the ease of application, this ensures much greater patient compliance to the therapy. Kelo-cote®, unlike silicone gel sheets, does not cause maceration, pruritus or promote localized infections.

Kelo-cote® Gel is available in tubes of 6g (0.2 oz), 15g (0.5 oz) and 60g (2 oz). Our patented Kelo-cote® Spray, developed for the treatment of larger, sensitive, painful or hard to reach scars, is available in cans of 50 ml and 100 ml.
